Vbeam laser operating principle

The Vbeam laser system is a pulsed liquid dye laser used to treat vascular skin lesions. The system transmits a 595 nm wavelength pulse, which passes through the dermis and epidermis and is absorbed by oxyhemoglobin in blood vessels rather than the surrounding tissue.

Selective photothermolysis is a process that specifically targets chromophores. The Vbeam laser targets oxyhemoglobin. Ideally, the wavelength chosen for treating vascular skin lesions should be well absorbed only by the affected areas, with minimal absorption by other chromophores.

Pulse duration – depending on the pulse duration, treatment can be aggressive (traumatic), with the formation of purpura due to vascular rupture, or non-traumatic, without purpura, due to slow heating of the skin, causing coagulation of the blood vessels.

The Vbeam system can deliver pulse durations of 0.45, 1.5, 3, 6, 10, 20, 30, and 40 ms. The shorter the pulse, the more destructive the energy, and conversely, the longer the pulse, the less destructive its energy, which thus promotes coagulation of blood vessels in specific areas of the skin without damaging their structure.

To achieve coagulation and prevent purpura, and to prevent thermal damage to the treated skin area and adjacent tissues, the laser pulse duration should be shorter than the thermal relaxation period of the skin area absorbing the laser radiation. The thermal relaxation period of a skin area is determined based on its area (milliseconds or longer for the treatment of vascular skin diseases).

Unique micropulses – each Vbeam laser pulse is divided into 8 micropulses, ensuring a consistent and uniform pulse distribution. This technical solution delivers more powerful energy per pulse without damaging the surrounding tissue.

Pigmentation treatment – a special convex lens attachment allows the Vbeam laser to be used for the treatment of superficial benign skin pigmentation. A 595 nm wavelength pulse absorbs melanin in the absence of hemoglobin. After the tip is withdrawn, normal blood flow is restored to the treatment area.
