What are vascular lesions?

Vascular lesions include birthmarks, rosacea, spider veins, varicose veins, telangiectasia, and others. They can be caused by natural aging, genetic predisposition, or environmental factors such as intense tanning and frequent sun exposure. Different vascular pathologies vary in size, shape, and distribution in a particular part of the body.

How does this work?

The treatment for vascular pathologies is based on the principle of selective photothermolysis. Using a laser with the appropriate wavelength, the energy is absorbed by chromophores (in the case of vascular disorders, hemoglobin serves as the chromophore) in the tissues and converted into heat, which coagulates the blood. Surrounding tissues remain unaffected. Multiple treatments are often required to achieve optimal results.

Successful treatment of vascular lesions requires careful laser application, as improperly selected parameters and non-compliance with the procedure technique can damage surrounding tissue. The complexity of this task depends largely on individual patient characteristics, such as skin type or the presence of other similar chromophores in the tissue. Specialists must take these factors into account, adjusting procedure parameters accordingly—energy density, pulse width, and frequency—to achieve the best results and minimize discomfort. Many devices are limited in their capabilities due to limitations in independently adjusting procedure parameters. Treating vascular lesions in dark-skinned patients is particularly challenging, as their skin contains a higher amount of melanin. Melanin in the patient’s skin will absorb laser energy equally with the target chromophore. Careless treatment in this case can result in extreme pain and burns.
