Tattoo Removal Systems

Fast and efficient

Tattooing is a widespread practice with a long cultural history. Given their widespread use, there is a growing trend toward removing unwanted tattoos. Tattoo removal involves the complete removal of the multicolored pigment (ink of various colors and shades) located beneath the skin.

Removal options

Before the advent of medical lasers, the most common tattoo removal methods were cryosurgery, dermabrasion, or skin excision. Darker colors or black ink are most sensitive to treatment, although devices that incorporate a variety of wavelengths can successfully remove the full spectrum of colors used in modern tattoos. Tattoo removal can be performed on any area of the body.

How does this work?

Laser tattoo removal is based on the principle of selective photothermolysis: laser light of a specific wavelength is absorbed by ink of a specific shade. The energy of the laser pulse breaks the ink into small particles, which are then eliminated from the body, leaving the surrounding tissue largely unaffected. For best results, multiple treatments are required, with the more colors the tattoo contains, the more treatments are needed.

Lasers for tattoo removal

Q-switch lasers (Q-switched lasers) are most commonly used for tattoo removal, as well as the recently introduced innovative picosecond lasers. Their ultra-short pulses, compared to the conventional nanosecond pulses of Q-switched lasers, optimize the photoacoustic pressure on the target and destroy ink particles with minimal heat generation, which eliminates skin trauma and scarring after the procedure.

When performing laser tattoo removal, it’s crucial to tailor the parameters to the individual patient’s skin condition and type to improve results and reduce the risk of side effects. Treating patients with darker skin types with laser, energy, and light-based devices is complicated by the increased risk of burning or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
