Pigmentation Treatment

What are pigmented lesions?

Various factors can trigger skin pigmentation disorders, such as sun exposure, genetic predisposition, and the natural aging process. They can also occur as a side effect of medical procedures. Regardless of their origin, pigmented lesions can vary significantly in size, shape, and distribution density on the skin surface. Pigmentation disorders include birthmarks, solar lentigines (age spots), freckles, hyperpigmentation, actinic keratosis, and pigmented nevi.

How does laser removal of age spots on the face and body work?

Laser pigment spot removal is based on the principle of selective photothermolysis. When a laser with the appropriate wavelength is applied, the energy is absorbed by chromophores in the tissue and converted into heat, which destroys the pigment. The surrounding tissue remains unaffected. Multiple treatments are often required to achieve optimal results.

Successful treatment of pigmented lesions requires the precise application of laser energy to avoid thermal injury. The complexity of this task depends largely on individual patient factors, such as skin type. Practitioners must take these characteristics into account by adjusting treatment parameters—including energy fluence and pulse duration—to achieve optimal clinical outcomes while minimizing patient discomfort. Treating patients with darker skin is particularly challenging because the skin contains higher concentrations of melanin, which competes with the target chromophore for laser energy absorption. Failure to exercise caution in such cases can lead to epidermal burns.
